Major Programme Requirement

 

Students are required to complete a minimum of 72 units of courses as follows:

For students taking two concentration areas, the courses must not overlap and count towards both concentration areas. In addition to the courses listed above, the Department may approve the inclusion of relevant special topics courses or courses at 5000 or above level in the concentration areas.

 

Explanatory Notes:

1.

ECON courses at 2000 and above level will be included in the calculation of Major GPA for honours classification.

2.

Students would be exempted from taking the courses listed in Column A if they have passed any of the corresponding courses listed in Column B. The minimum Major Programme Requirements will be reduced by up to 3 units for each of the courses exempted.

Students who have obtained grade 3 or above in both the compulsory part and Module 1 (Calculus and Statistics) of the HKDSE Mathematics examination may, upon application, be exempted from ECON1101, in which case the Major Programme Requirement will be reduced by 2 units. 

Students who have obtained grade 3 or above in both the compulsory part and Module 2 (Algebra and Calculus) of the HKDSE Mathematics examination are not required to take ECON1101. The Major Programme Requirement for these students will be reduced by 2 units.

Students who have obtained grade 3 or above in the “Business, Accounting and Financial Studies” subject of HKDSE may, upon application, be exempted from ECON1141, in which case the Major Programme Requirement will be reduced by 2 units.

[c]

Students are allowed to take ECON courses at 5000 or above level to fulfill the Elective Courses requirement, subject to the consent of the course instructor.

[d]

Students may declare a concentration area (i) after the requisite courses for the concentration area have been completed, or (ii) in the same term that the requisite courses are expected to be completed. Upon completion of all requisite courses for a concentration area, such concentration area will be indicated on academic transcripts.

[e]

Students are required to declare which MATH or STAT course is to be counted towards the requirement of the Advanced Economics concentration area at their final term of attendance.

[f]

Courses counted towards the fulfillment of any Required Course requirements cannot be counted towards the fulfillment of the Elective Course requirements.
