The Department of Economics of CUHK will organize a recruitment camp on the CUHK campus for prospective PhD students from May 17 to May 19, 2024. It gives a unique opportunity for high calibre candidates to intensively experience the prospect of pursuing PhD studies and interact with our faculty members on an one-to-one basis. It is also a special channel for us to further your research interests and potentials. Outstanding participants will be considered by the Department for an early admission to our 2025/26 PhD programme.

 

Application Deadline

Applicants should submit applications through the online application system by HKT 1:00pm of Mar 18, 2024 (Mon). No application fee would be charged. Late applications will not be considered. Invitations will be sent out to shortlisted candidates by Apr 5, 2024 (Fri). Unsuccessful applicants would not be informed individually. 

 

Application Requirement

The recruitment camp is mainly targeted for:

  1. current undergraduate/ postgraduate students who would be graduating by July 2025;
  2. bachelor/ master degree holders who plan to apply for the 2025/26 PhD programme

Other requirement(s):

  • A cumulative GPA of 3.3 or above out of 4.0 or equivalent; 
  • Special consideration will be given to applicants with academic publication(s) in English and/or paper presentation(s) in international conference(s).

 

Application Procedures

  • Applicants are required to complete the online application form and upload the following documents* in the following order to support their application:
  1. CV
  2. Academic transcript(s) and graduation certificate(s) of undergraduate and postgraduate studies (if applicable)
  3. Score report(s) of TOEFL/ IELTS (Optional)
  4. Personal statement including research ideas and experience, and future planning for a research career written in English (Word limit: 1000 words)
  5. Abstract of conference presentation(s) or publication(s) (if any)
  6. Certificate(s) of scholarship(s) and award(s) (if any)
  7. A copy of Hong Kong Identity Card for local applicants or Passport/ID document for non-local applicants
  8. A confidential recommendation letter directly sent by your referee*

*Please combine item 1 to item 6 mentioned above into one PDF file for upload and name the file in the format "your English name_Supporting" . (Size limit: 20MB)

*For item 7, please name the file in the format "your English name_ID Copy" or "your English name_Passport Copy"  and upload it as a separate file in the online system. (Size limit: 5MB)

*For item 8, please inform your referee to send the confidential recommendation letter to econgrad@cuhk.edu.hk directly by quoting your application number on or before HKT 1:00pm of Mar 21, 2024 (Thu).

 

Accommodation and Travel

For each selected participant who lives outside Hong Kong, the Department will provide (i) three nights of accommodation (May 16 - May 18) on/ near CUHK campus and, (ii) a travel allowance of up to HK$5,000 to cover the actual cost of the cheapest direct return economy class air passage between your residence and Hong Kong on reimbursement basis. Mainland China applicants may choose to claim the actual cost of the second class rail fare if they decide to come by the high speed rail.

Successful applicants, at their own cost, may need to: 

  • apply for visa to enter Hong Kong (if applicable)
  • pay for meals and local transportation if not otherwise arranged by the Department

 

Scholarships for selected outstanding participants

All selected outstanding participants will be granted the Postgraduate Studentship, which values HK$18,360 for the academic year 2023-24, presented by the University for the whole normative study period, and also the PhD Early Entrance Scholarship awarded by our Department with a minimum value equivalent to the first year's tuition fee (i.e. HK$42,100 for the academic year 2023-24).

They would also be considered for the nomination to the following prestigious scholarship(s) with a maximum value of HK$1.6 million:

  • Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme (HKPFS)
  • CUHK Vice-Chancellor PhD Scholarship
