MPhil Degree Programme PhD Degree Programme Course Description

General Information

The graduate programmes in Economics at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, one of the top universities in Asia, are well established in the territory. They aim to equip candidates with theoretical training, quantitative expertise and practical knowledge to enable them to master and tackle economic problems, with special attention to the economies of Hong Kong, China, and the Asia-Pacific region. Graduates since 1974 have been very successful in their careers as economists, researchers, and executives in both the private and public sectors, and as lecturers and professors in local tertiary institutions and overseas universities.

Students can enrol in both programmes on either a full-time or part-time basis. Applicants to the MPhil programme should possess a bachelor degree. The programme consists of one year of advanced course work plus a research thesis. The usual period of completion is 2 years for full-time students. Recently over 20 new MPhil students are admitted each year.

Applicants to the PhD programme should possess a master degree in Economics or in a related field. In addition to advanced course work, candidates are expected to complete a substantial thesis based on their research after passing a qualifying examination. The usual period of completion is 3 years for full-time students.

All successful applicants (as full-time MPhil or PhD students) will be offered teaching assistantships. Assistantship holders are required to assist in teaching or research work. In recent years, the monthly stipend is about HK$11,800. Other information on tuition, housing, libraries and computers can be found in the Graduate School Brochure.
